A lot of people think New Year’s resolutions are simply an exercise in futility. By the first week, 27% of us abandon our New Year resolutions. At the two-week mark, 31% of people quit, and just over half of us make it to the one-month mark, according to Statistic Brain.
Although you may have made it to month two, you need help staying motivated. Perhaps the weight loss hasn’t come as fast as you’d like or maybe your abs are not quite ripping. Results take time. Two things to keep in mind:
Adding muscle adds weight:
Have you been exercising, eating right, maybe you’ve even lost a few inches, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? Don’t panic. “Gaining” a few pounds on the scale can be misleading, and not the exercise results you want. Muscle fitness does lead to weight gain. If you are using a scale, it will tell you how much you weigh, not how fit you are. Pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition to track your progress. Use a tape measure to quantify your waist, arm, and leg measurements.
Pair your workouts with healthy living habits:
- Practice healthy eating throughout the day. Don’t forget portion control. If you want to live to be 100, go for larger portions of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and consume smaller portions of higher calorie foods containing large amounts of sugar and fats.
- Stay hydrated. Getting the proper amount of water is very important. Every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies need water. A good rule of thumb is our bodies need eight-ounce glasses of water daily.
- Don’t neglect dental hygiene. Dental hygiene and heart health are related. Some studies indicate that regular flossing could add over six years to your life. Why? The theory is that the bacteria that produce dental plaque enter the bloodstream and are somehow associated with inflammation that blocks blood vessels and causes heart disease.
- Sleep is crucial to our wellbeing. As we sleep, the brain clears away the debris of the day’s work while resetting and restoring nerve networks so that they can function fully when we wake.
