When you think about your workout do you get excited about the challenge ahead or do you think of it as a task to complete? If you think of it as a chore or task you might want to rethink your workouts and start to incorporate ways to make it fun again! The average person spends almost 80-hours or more exercising and that’s great news. As you probably already know, there is a multitude of benefits when it comes to working out, including disease prevention, lower body weight, energy, better sleeping patterns, and so much more. Yet, if you’ve been working out for a long period of time it’s very easy to fall into a rut and just go through the motions, in turn, this can make your workouts mundane and possibly not as effective. Workouts are most beneficial when there is a mind-body connection. Here are some tips to make your workouts more fun!
Change your music
Music can be a huge motivator when it comes to your workouts, it has been shown that energetic music can reduce fatigue, increase stimulation, improve coordination, and studies have even indicated a possible positive connection with our nervous system. If you’ve been listening to the same playlist or radio station on Pandora, consider changing it up a little bit. Search for your favorite genre or even a playlist created by another user with similar taste. Listening to new music can be a huge motivator because you won’t know what to expect as far as what song is coming on next. Try to move with the tempo of the song and challenge yourself in the parts where the tempo is high. Better yet, try to download a playlist that is out of your norm or expected.
Find a friend
There is something to be said about a solo workout, you put your headphones in, focus on the task at hand and get it done. However, having a workout buddy can add an extra element of fun to your workouts that you might not have even considered. If you cycle, join a group ride, if you run, grab a friend, indoor gym enthusiasts can also find companionship and accountability with a spotter for weights, a spin class, or simply someone who is like-minded and shows up at the gym at the same time you do. Sometimes having a friend join you for an activity will add an extra push to get you past a plateau and is an easy way to squeeze in some extra face time.
Track your progress
If you are stuck in a fitness rut it might be because you are not properly tracking your results. Tracking your progress with an application or even an old school paper journal can be a giant motivator. It will help your spirit in terms of knowing that all your hard work is really paying off. Take some time to really think about your goals and start tracking them religiously. If losing inches off your body or gaining muscle is one of your motivators you will easily be able to see the results you’ve been working so hard for, even if it feels like you are standing still.
Try something new
If you are not seeing the results you want and your motivation is lackluster it could be because you are doing the same motions over and over. Your body can get used to repetitive movements and it can be hard to try to challenge yourself. Cross training in a different sport can be incredibly beneficial and rewarding. You might even discover a new exercise you love and look forward to. Start off slowly by maybe joining a class you’ve never taken or even hiring a personal trainer to unlock hidden potential. If an indoor gym is your main to-go, consider taking your workouts outdoors and connecting with nature. Taking a hike, running, biking, or even just walking outdoors can instantly boost your mood and motivation. You can also change up the time of day you workout to easily change your perspective a little. There is nothing wrong with an evening run or workout, even if you only do it once a week.
